Actor Sonu Sood who has been dubbed a ‘superhero’ for his philanthropic work during the pandemic-induced lockdown, has been conferred with the SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The award was presented at a virtual ceremony on Monday evening.

With this Sonu Sood joins the likes of Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Priyanka Chopra who have been similarly honoured by different UN bodies.

“This is a rare honour. A UN recognition is very special. I have done whatever little I have done, in my own humble way, for my fellow countrymen without any expectations. However, to be recognized and awarded feels good. I fully support the UNDP in its endeavours to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Planet Earth and mankind will greatly benefit from the implementation of these goals”, said Sonu Sood, on receiving the coveted award.

Sonu Sood who tirelessly worked to help stranded migrant workers get to their homes during the lockdown, had recently revealed he is also planning to write a book about his experiences.

"... I want to thank God for making me a catalyst in helping the migrants. While my heart beats in Mumbai, after this movement I feel a part of me lives in the villages of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Uttarakhand and various other states where I have now found new friends and made deep connections.
"I have decided to put these experiences, stories that are embedded in my soul forever, in a book ... I'm excited, nervous and overwhelmed, and I can't wait to connect with you through my book. I look forward to your support—and love you all," Sood had said in a statement recently.
