Is 'Project Power' a remake of Vikram's 'Iru Mugan'?

Twitter users pointed out the similarities between the two films

The 2016 Kollywood movie Iru Mugan had Chiyaan Vikram playing a double role. One of the characters was 'Love', a wanted criminal scientist who devised 'Speed'—a drug that gives a person extraordinary strength for five minutes when he inhales the drug.

The movie was back in focus on Twitter after years following the release of the trailer of Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The premises of the movie seems to have something in common with the 2016 Tamil film—the drug that gives people super power for five minutes.

According to the IMDb description of Project Power, which will stream on Netflix, the movie is about “a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes.” The movie will stream on Netflix from August 14.

After the release of the trailer of Project Power, many on Twitter pointed out that the premise of the movie is similar to the 2016 Tamil movie. The trailer was released last month.

A user said although the premise looks similar, the "Netflix original is manifold wild and imaginative and whatnot."

However, Thameens Films, which produced Iru Mugan issued a clarification, saying they have not sold the remake right of the movie. “We haven’t sold the remake rights to any Global/Regional languages of #ChiyaanVikram’s #IRUMUGAN produced by @shibuthameens directed by @anandshank. Hope this will clear the social media confusions & comparisons with @iamjamiefoxx #ProjectPower by @netflix @NetflixIndia,” the production house said in a tweet.
