Use of drugs is rampant among a section of young actors in Mollywood, Kerala Film Producers' Association said on Thursday. M. Renjith, president of the association alleged that use of drugs is common, especially among the new crop of young actors, on locations of films.

He urged the excise department to conduct a probe and raid caravans of actors. “While the use of ordinary drugs could be detected easily, the use of drugs like LSD cannot be detected easily,” he added. They stressed that not all young actors use drugs, and that the association does not want to take names.

The association discussed the issue after the press meet convened to announce the ban imposed on actor Shane Nigam over breach of contract.

Responding to the controversy, actor and executive member of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) Baburaj told Manorama News that 'use of synthetic drugs has become fashionable' and that even female actors are involved. He said that the use of drugs was derailing the industry as it is leading to unprofessional attitudes on behalf of the actors with some of them not turning up for shoots on time, or picking calls.
