Dileep: AMMA's favourite son

The actor's reinstatement has put AMMA's motives under doubt

The decision of AMMA, an association of Malayalam movie artists, to take back actor Dileep into the body has created much hue and cry in the state. AMMA restored the membership of Dileep, an accused in the abduction and sexual assault case of a female actor, claiming that he was expelled without following the necessary procedures.

Some office bearers of the AMMA were of the view that it was ‘injustice’ to expel a member without providing him a chance to respond to the accusations.

However, there has been no such reconsiderations in most of the cases where other actors faced similar actions from AMMA. Late actor Thilakan’s suspension is one such instance.

AMMA accused Thilakan of acting against the organisation’s interests and talking ill about its members. Thilakan reacted saying that he was not clear about the ‘sin’ that he had committed for facing a ban. However, he failed to elicit enough support within the industry, except from a few people like director Vinayan, who was sidelined by both AMMA and the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA).

The scenario was similar in the case of late comedy veteran Mala Aravindan. AMMA banned him for acting in Vinayan's film. Since Aravindan used to stay away from the media, the public remained uninformed about the incident.

It is said that Thilakan was suspended for the same reason after he agreed to act in Vinayan’s film and that AMMA had warned many actors against working with the director. Vinayan moved the court against the organisation’s actions and got some relief.

In the case of Dileep, AMMA, however, had no hesitation to re-induct him even as he is facing trial in a gruesome case. He was a former treasurer of the association.

News reports quoted various office-bearers of the organisation saying that they feel ‘good’ that Dileep did not approach the court regarding AMMA expelling him without following due procedures.

It is ironical that the actors' body is more ‘concerned’ for the accused than for the victim. The duplicity in AMMA's approach to Dileep and other actors raises doubts over its motive.

Now, with Dileep back in AMMA, when is FEFKA going to lift the ban on him?
