The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA), a renowned independent reference and analytical platform that maps out the strengths and weaknesses of global military aviation, has released its Global Air Powers Rankings for the year 2026.

WDMMA, which tracks military aircraft inventories across dozens of countries and over 100 air services, has rated the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the top ten — one place above the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The IAF was ranked sixth with a TrueValueRating (TvR) of 69.4, while seventh-ranked China received a TvR of 63.8.

Why was the IAF rated above the PLAAF?

“The formula produces the ‘TruVal Rating’ (TVR), helping to definitively separate each power based on not only overall strength, but also modernisation, logistical support, attack and defence capabilities, and so on. In this way, a power is not simply assessed on its total quantity of aircraft but rather its quality and general mix of inventory,” WDMMA said, explaining their parameters.

A specialised focus on local aero-industry capabilities, inventory balance and force experience was also considered while ranking the forces, it said. “Greater weight is given to categories generally overlooked by some powers, namely special-mission, dedicated bomber force, CAS, training, and on-order units.”

Here are five observations based on WDMMA’s Global Air Powers Rankings 2026 that will excite defence enthusiasts and Indian military fans:

1. The Pakistan Air Force, which is a close ally and partner of Beijing, was ranked 18th with a 46.3 TvR. WDMMA’s TrueValueRating is praised and respected as it analyses factors above and beyond the numerical superiority of air forces. It credited the IAF with operating 1,716 units against the PLAAF’s tally of 3,733 units. Pakistan, as per the report, owned 879 units.

2. The aerial assets owned by the naval forces of the countries are rated separately in the list. The aviation units of the Indian Navy, with 232 units, were ranked 27th (232 units, 41.2 TvR), followed by the Indian Army at 36th (540 units, 30.0 TvR).

3. The Chinese Navy’s aviation branch was ranked 15th (436 units; 49.3 TvR), while the PLA came one place above the Indian Army at 35th (1,188 units; 31.3 TvR). Russia, France and Israel—three of New Delhi's key defence partners—also featured in the top 10.

4. The aviation assets of the Pakistani Navy and Army did not feature in the list. As per the official website, the current WDMMA inventory consists of 103 tracked countries, 129 air services covered (including Army, Navy, and Marine branches of service where applicable), and 48,082 total aircraft.
