The US has approved the sale of advanced technology and support for F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan. The $686 million package includes Link16 systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics updates, training, and comprehensive logistical support for the multirole fighter aircraft.

Pakistan reportedly operates roughly 70–75 F-16s, spread across several frontline squadrons, making them one of the mainstay fighter types of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

One of the primary objectives of the sale is modernising Pakistan's F-16 fleet and addressing the operational safety concerns. The sale is also intended at supporting the foreign policy and national security objectives of the US while ensuring that Pakistan continues to operate its F-16 fleet safely and effectively.

The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), in a recent letter to Congress, gave the approval, even as it clarified that the proposed sale of this equipment and support will not change the basic military balance in the region.

According to Pakistani media reports, DSCA explained the rationale for the sale, saying this would support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the US by allowing Pakistan to retain interoperability with US and partner forces in ongoing counterterrorism efforts. This would also aid the preparations for future contingency operations.

According to the DSCA letter, the sale will ensure Pakistan's capability to meet current and future threats by updating and refurbishing the F-16 fleet.

The updates to the F-16 fleet will ensure more seamless integration and interoperability between the Pakistan Air Force and the US Air Force in combat operations, exercises, and training. Besides, the refurbishment will extend the aircraft's life through 2040 while addressing critical flight safety concerns.

The letter said Pakistan has shown a commitment to maintaining its military forces and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
