Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), and researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi developed ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat), a lightweight bulletproof jacket that offers total protection to the defence personnel.

The jackets, developed at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT, Delhi, are created from polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic material.

"The design configuration is based on characterisation of various materials at high strain rate followed by appropriate modelling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO," the defence ministry said in a release.

The armour plates for ABHED jackets have passed all the necessary trials as per the protocols and meet the highest threat levels.

They are also lighter than the maximum weight limits stipulated in the respective General Staff Qualitative Requirement of the Army.
