Maharashtra has taken a historic step as the first state in India to formalise a “nuclear energy” partnership. The state inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO), alongside the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA).
This partnership aims to explore the co-development of advanced nuclear power plants in the state, in line with India’s clean energy ambitions
Earlier this week, NPCIL, MAHAGENCO, and MITRA signed the MoU to collaborate in the field of nuclear energy development in the state.
The signing was attended by leading dignitaries and officials, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior scientists, administrative heads, and energy experts.
The MoU is the first of its kind, with Maharashtra becoming the first state in the country to formalise such a partnership. Chief Minister Fadnavis expressed delight in the state leading this initiative, stating that Maharashtra is “the first state in the country to enter into such an MoU.” He congratulated the participating organisations and affirmed that the state government will extend all necessary support to ensure successful implementation.
Present at the event were senior officials, such as NPCIL MD Bhuwan Chandra Pathak, MAHAGENCO MD Radhakrishnan B, MITRA Joint CEOs Aman Mittal and Praveen Singh Pardeshi, and Additional Chief Secretary - Energy Abha Shukla, along with technical and project directors from NPCIL.
“This strategic partnership reinforces NPCIL’s commitment to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable nuclear power, supporting India’s long-term clean energy and energy-security objectives,” read a statement from the Department of Atomic Energy.
