On 'National No Smoking Day' (March 13), Bengaluru Police came out with a directive, asking hotel, bar, restaurant, club, and pub owners to remove any illegal designated smoking areas (DSA) as mandated by law.
These establishments have been urged to align with the ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and comply with the provisions outlined in the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003.
The police pointed out that the designated smoking zones are exposing customers and staff working in the premises to harmful chemicals and carcinogens.
"This appeal serves as a reminder and a mandate for all hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs, and pubs within the jurisdiction of Bengaluru to remove all illegal created designated smoking areas or rooms which are not compliant with COTPA," the police notification said.
DSAs must be distinctly marked and adequately ventilated as per the COTPA guidelines to ensure non-smokers are not exposed to second-hand smoke.
Providing food, water, beverages, or any tobacco products within designated smoking areas is strictly prohibited, the notification further stated.
The regulation intends to discourage smoking by limiting the convenience associated with smoking areas.
The police warned routine checks and inspections to ensure compliance with these regulations, and establishments found violating the norms will face stringent penalties.
The intention behind these regulations is not to impede the operations of any establishments but to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all citizens, the police clarified.
