Chief executive officer of Qatar Airways Akbar Al Baker announced that he is stepping down from his role after being at the helm of affairs for 27 years.
“After 27 years of service, I am writing to you to announce that I will step down from the Qatar Airways Group. In 1996, with a fleet of just five aircraft, unwavering dedication, and a loyal and passionate team, together we embarked on a remarkable journey to aviation excellence," Akbar Al Baker said in a letter to employees, according to The Times of India.
He will continue to be the CEO till November 5.
Thanking the employees for making the airliner what it is today, he wrote: "Our company's success is not mine alone; it belongs to each and every one of you - the talented individuals of the Qatar Airways family who have poured their passion, ingenuity and immense effort into every project, every challenge and every triumph we've experienced together....I want to express my deepest gratitude for the trust and confidence you've placed in me over the years."
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Badr al Meer will be the company's new CEO. Currently, al Meer is the chief operating officer of Doha's Hamad international airport.
Akbar Al Baker was appointed as the CEO in 1997, three years after the state-owned carrier was launched.
