Elon Musk pulls down Twitter's new 'official tag' hours after launch

The account verification system has been in place since 2009

Billionaire Elon Musk, after taking over Twitter, has been making some dramatic changes. He fired about half of the company's staff, made the blue tick available for $8 a month and now he changed the blue tick-- turned it grey.

The blue tick, which stands for the verification of an account, has been in place since 2009. The system was created to ensure those with high-profile accounts are who they say they are. Currently, there are about 423,000 verified accounts on Twitter.

The new label was added to high-profile accounts like Coca-Cola, Nike and Apple. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's account featured the grey tick too, for a while. However, the labels started disappearing a few hours later.

American Youtuber and tech reviewer Marques Brownlee tweeted screenshots confirming that the label had disappeared. Musk then tweeted, “I just killed it”. Musk later tweeted, "Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. We will keep what works and change what doesn't."

"Not all previously verified accounts will get the "Official" label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures," Twitter's early-stage products executive Esther Crawford tweeted on November 9. It is unclear why Musk pulled down the new label.
