Petroleum companies have increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 25. As a result, the price of a non-subsidized 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi has risen to Rs 884.50.
The price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has also become costlier by Rs 75. The final price comes up to be Rs 1,693 in Delhi. The new rates are effective from Wednesday.
This is the third straight month of hike in prices of LPG cylinders. With the latest increase, subsidised LPG price has now taken the cumulative rate hike since January 1 to Rs 190 per cylinder. The government eliminated subsidies on LPG by raising rates every month. These monthly increases led to the elimination of subsidies by May 2020.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at the government over the rise in prices of domestic cooking gas, and said the country is uniting against this injustice. The Congress party has been attacking the government over the rise in petrol, diesel and LPG prices and has been demanding reduction in them by removing some of the taxes imposed by the central government.
"The one who is forcing the public to sleep empty stomach is himself sleeping under the shadow of friends....but the country is uniting against the injustice," Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. The Congress leader used the hashtag "#IndiaAgainstBJPLoot" and shared a chart with prices of domestic LPG cylinders in four metros in the country from January this year showing how the prices have risen.
Meanwhile, oil marketing companies have cut the prices of petrol and diesel by 15 paise, after remaining static for almost seven days. The latest cut had come in the wake of softening of oil prices in anticipation of rising production by main oil producers this month.
Petrol and diesel retailed at Rs 101.34 and Rs 88.77 a litre respectively in Delhi. In Mumbai, petrol prices dropped by 13 paise to retail at Rs 107.39 per litre. Diesel prices fell by 15 paise in the city and now costs Rs 96.33 per litre.
In Kolkata, petrol now costs Rs 101.72 per litre and diesel at Rs 91.84 per litre after reduction of 10 and 14 paise respectively.
Chennai saw a cut of 12 paise in petrol and 14 paise in diesel taking the prices to Rs 99.08 and Rs 99.38 respectively.
