With an aim of having four lakh vehicles on roads in four years, the Gujarat government on Tuesday announced its electric vehicle policy, which includes a subsidy of up to Rs 20,000 for two-wheelers, Rs 50,000 for three-wheelers, and up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for four-wheelers.

Announcing the policy titled Gujarat Electric Vehicle Policy 2021, chief minister Vijay Rupani said that charging facilities will be installed in housing and commercial infrastructures. He claimed that the subsidy given by the Gujarat government would be double per kilowatt given by any other state.

He said the idea is to make Gujarat a hub for manufacturing electric vehicles and reduce pollution. Start-ups will be encouraged under the project.

According to Rupani, at least 6 lakh tonne CO2 emission will be reduced. It is expected to help in saving fuel worth Rs 5 crore.

The government said that currently there are 278 charging stations, while 250 charging stations will come up, taking the number of charging stations to 528.
