Toyota enters India's luxury car market with Vellfire MPV; sold out for 3 months

Japanese car giant Toyota has had a huge success with its Innova multi-purpose vehicle. The MPV priced between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 22 lakh ex-showroom has been a best seller for the company in India. On Friday, the company launched the Vellfire MPV, with which it drives into the luxury segment in the country for the first time.

Toyota Vellfire will cost Rs 79.50 lakh ex-showroom and for the steep price, the MPV does come feature packed.

Under the hood it is powered by a 2.5 liter petrol hybrid engine. Vellfire will be the company’s second strong hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV) offering in India following Toyota Camry, and will offer a fuel efficiency of 16.35 km per liter.

But, what will attract the buyer more is the creature comforts it offers inside. For instance, the second row gets executive lounge seats, which are be extended and have individual tables. There is a 10 inch touch audio system with 17-speaker JBL system, there is a 13 inch rear screen, twin sunroof, and power sliding side doors, among other things. It will be high on safety features too.

“The new Vellfire truly encapsulates Toyota’s class defining technology, comfort and elegance and sustainability that ultimately offers an excellent driving experience for the customers,” said Masakazu Yoshimura, managing director of Toyota Kirloskar.

Vellfire will be imported and sold in India, and with 180 bookings, the first three months of shipments have been already sold out, according to the company.

“Globally, we have a caravan of luxury offerings, and the launch of Toyota Vellfire in India marks a significant moment in our journey,” added Yoshimura.

Toyota has announced plans to sell more than 5.5 million electrified vehicles by 2030 globally, and hybrid electric vehicles, as well as plug-in hybrid vehicles, will play a key role. By 2025, it hopes to have every model at Toyota and its premium arm Lexus available as a dedicated electrified model or with an electrified option, according to those plans announced back in 2017.
