Greater Noida, 18 April - Each year, on April 19th, World Liver Day is commemorated globally to raise awareness about the critical importance of liver health and the various diseases that affect it. Fatty liver disease, a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver cells, is alarmingly on the rise in India, affecting a significant portion of the population. Recent studies indicate that the prevalence of fatty liver disease in India ranges from 10% to 56%, with higher rates observed among individuals who are obese, diabetic, have deranged lipid profiles, or lead sedentary lifestyles.

Dr. Apurva Pande, Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, said "A higher prevalence of this condition among men in India. Typically, fatty liver disease often goes undetected until an ultrasound abdomen is conducted for an unrelated reason. It is classified into three grades based on ultrasound imaging. However, if left untreated, it can progress to liver fibrosis and ultimately lead to cirrhosis, highlighting the critical need for early detection and intervention."

"While fatty liver disease may present silently, there are subtle symptoms that individuals should not overlook," says Dr. Praween Kumar, CEO of Fortis Hospital Greater Noida. These include:

1. Fatigue: Persistent fatigue despite adequate rest could indicate fatty liver disease, impacting daily life significantly.

2. Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss, especially when accompanied by fatigue or abdominal discomfort, should raise concerns about liver involvement.

3. Abdominal Discomfort: Vague discomfort or mild pain in the upper right abdomen may signal liver inflammation or enlargement due to fatty liver disease.

4. Weakness: Generalized weakness not attributable to other factors could be linked to underlying liver issues, including fatty liver disease.

5. Elevated Liver Enzymes: Abnormal levels of liver enzymes detected through routine blood tests may indicate liver inflammation or damage.

6. Enlarged Liver: Healthcare professionals may detect an enlarged liver during physical examinations, suggesting the presence of fatty liver disease.

Given the serious implications of untreated fatty liver disease, it is imperative for individuals to be aware of these symptoms and seek medical evaluation if experiencing any of them. Early detection and lifestyle interventions can significantly mitigate the progression of the disease and improve overall liver health.
