Gujarat polls: Cong releases second list of candidates, replaces four nominees

The Congress on Monday released its second list of 13 candidates for the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections scheduled to be held on December 9.

The party decided to replace four candidates on the list which was announced on Sunday. Bhikhabhai Joshi replaces Amit Thummar in Junagadh, Jaish Patel replaces Kiran Thakor in Bharuch, Ashok Jirawala will contest from Kamrej in place of Nilesh Kumbani and Dhirubhai Gajera is the new candidate for the Varachha Road seat in place of Prafulbhai C. Togadiya, reports PTI.

Senior party leader Oscar Fernandes released the second list.

According to IANS, the list also include the names of Mithul Donga from Rajkot East, Dinesh Chovatiya from Rajkot South, and Meraman Goriya from Dwarka seat.

The second phase of elections will be held on December 14 and the counting of votes will take place on December 18.

Meanwhile, the list of prominent party leaders, who will campaign in the state include Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The party had also released a list of 40 campaigners, which includes OBC leader Alpesh Thakor, who recently joined the Congress, according to PTI.

Other party leaders who would campaign in the state are: Ashok Gehlot, Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad Bharatsinh Solanki, Randeep Surjewala, Kamal Nath, Sachin Pilot, Madhusudan Mistry, Deepak Babariya, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rajiv Shukla, reports PTI.
