As Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai, her political rival M. Karunanidhi also fell sick and was advised rest.

The DMK chief has developed an allergy due to some medicines he takes on a regular basis, according to a press release issued by the party. It said the 92-year-old leader would not be in a position to meet visitors.

Meanwhile, prayers are on across the state for the speedy recovery of Jayalalithaa who was admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai on September 22 after she complained of fever and dehydration. The doctors later said she needed a longer stay at the hospital as she was suffering from infection and put her on respiratory support.

In its latest medical bulletin on October 21, the hospital said that the chief minister "is interacting and progressing gradually." It said Jayalalithaa "continues to be under treatment and observation for all vital parameters, respiratory support and passive physiotherapy."
