Painting red

Textbooks in Left-ruled Tripura has little Indian history

APTOPIX India Gandhi Anniversary (File) Officials of Tripura Board of Secondary Education denied that they were under any pressure from government

The Left Front may have been reduced to almost becoming a regional party post the recently concluded elections after the rout in West Bengal, but this does not prevent the party from painting the place where they rule, red, namely Tripura and Kerala.

The Class 9 history textbook in Tripura has nothing Indian about it except a chapter on Mahatma Gandhi. And if you thought that the chapter on Gandhi had to do with his contribution to India's freedom struggle, get ready to be disappointed. The chapter has Gandhi's views on...wait for it...cricket!

According to media reports, the textbook, prepared by Kalyan Choudhury, former head of history department in Kolkata’s Maharaja Manindra Chandra College, has chapters dedicated to Russian and French revolutions, Adolf Hitler and the birth of cricket but nothing on Indian history.

Officials of Tripura Board of Secondary Education denied that they were under any pressure from government to prepare the textbook with little information about Indian history and added that National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT) guidelines were followed while preparing the book.
