Union Home Minister Amit Shah hit out at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday and said the state should offer engineering and medical education in Tamil in the state. Shah’s comments come amid a raging Hindi imposition row in the southern state.
Attending the 56th Raising Day of the CISF at Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, the Union home minister said the Centre has now permitted conducting CAPF examinations in regional languages. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allowed conducting CAPF examinations in all languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Now, youth from Tamil Nadu can attend these examinations in Tamil,” Shah said.

Saying Tamil Nadu played a significant role in strengthening India's cultural stream, Shah said, “Be it administrative reforms, attaining spiritual heights, education or the unity and integrity of the nation – Tamil Nadu has reinforced Indian culture in every sphere.”

The Union minister urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin to offer professional courses like engineering and medicine in regional languages. “I appeal to the Tamil Nadu chief minister to start the engineering and medical education in Tamil in the state for the benefit of students,” he said. Shah added he has been raising this issue for two years but no action has been taken.
Amit Shah’s comments come as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre is facing stiff opposition from the state against the National Education Policy and implementation of a three-language formula. The state has opposed the policy saying Centre is trying to impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states. Stalin termed NEP a “poison” and said they would never implement three-language policy in Tamil Nadu.
