Coimbatore (TN), Nov 2 (PTI) The Left parties in Tamil Nadu will hold a major rally in Tiruchirappalli on November 23 demanding the protection of working-class rights, immediate approval of the Coimbatore Metro project, and joint government action to curb inflation, CPI State Secretary M Veerapandian said on Monday.
According to him, lakhs of people are expected to participate in the demonstration to highlight the struggles of those living in poverty.
"We expect lakhs of people to attend," Veerapandian told reporters here, adding that it is a rally demanding rights for the working class.
Stressing the infrastructure requirements of the western region, the CPI leader demanded that the government expedite clearance for the mass transit system.
"First of all, the government has to approve the Coimbatore Metro," he said, noting that Coimbatore is a very important city compared to other districts, making the project crucial.
"The CPI will continue to struggle for the approval of the Metro," he added.
Veerapandian also urged both the Union and State governments to initiate coordinated measures to bring down the prices of essential commodities.
"Another demand is that the central government and the state government must work together to reduce price levels and the cost of living -- specifically for items like rice, dal, sugar, and milk," he said, terming it a "very serious issue".
"We stand with the people, especially those living in poverty," he said.
