Amaravati, Nov 2 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Energy Department has placed power utilities on high alert ahead of Cyclone Murasu, directing officials to take precautionary measures to minimise damage to electricity infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Energy Minister G Ravi Kumar on Monday instructed power distribution companies to remain particularly vigilant in South Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, which are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds under the cyclone's influence.

“We have placed power utilities on high alert ahead of Cyclone Murasu and directed officials to take all necessary precautions to minimise damage to electricity infrastructure and ensure an uninterrupted power supply,” said Kumar in an official press release.

He directed officials to maintain adequate stocks of electricity poles, conductors, transformers, cables and other essential equipment at strategic locations to facilitate immediate restoration of damaged infrastructure.

The minister also asked power distribution companies to deploy sufficient manpower, vehicles and machinery in vulnerable areas and appoint special officers to oversee preparedness and restoration activities.

Officials were instructed to remove dangerous tree branches hanging over power lines to prevent disruptions and electrical accidents. The department was also instructed to mobilise additional personnel and equipment from neighbouring states, including Tamil Nadu and Telangana, if required.

Kumar said the utilities must ensure that power supply in affected areas was restored within 48 hours, subject to weather conditions and safety considerations.

He also stressed the need for round-the-clock monitoring and coordination with other government departments.

Warning people against approaching fallen electricity wires or damaged installations, the minister advised them to exercise caution and cooperate with officials.

"Protecting every human life is our highest priority. People must exercise utmost caution and cooperate with the authorities to prevent avoidable accidents," said Kumar.

The minister also reviewed the progress of restoration works following Cyclone Arnab and directed officials to expedite the process.
