Jalaun(UP), Oct 31 (PTI) Alleged synthetic drug manufacturing unit operating under the cover of a rose-water factory here has been busted, with police suspending the concerned beat in-charge over alleged failure to gather intelligence about the illegal activity, officials said on Saturday.

The illegal factory was operating under a tin shed spread over an area of around 400 square metres in Airi Rampur village under Dakor police station limits.

Mephedrone (MD), a synthetic psychotropic drug, was allegedly being manufactured there using sulphuric acid and other chemicals, Rawat said.

Superintendent of Police Suresh Chandra Rawat said a joint operation was conducted by Jalaun police and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on October 29, following specific inputs from the DRI's Uttar Pradesh unit.

A large quantity of acid was seized from the premises, while the manufactured contraband was recovered from the house of the main accused, identified as Hemant.

The alleged mastermind behind the operation has been identified as Santosh Adke, a Maharashtra resident, who was earlier arrested by the DRI and sent to jail, the SP said.

Taking action over alleged failure to gather intelligence about the illegal activity in the area, the police suspended sub-inspector Prem Pal Singh, the concerned beat and area in-charge, with immediate effect.

Rawat said further action would be taken on the basis of facts that emerge during the investigation.
