Lucknow, May 13 (PTI) Two officials of the Social Welfare Department in Azamgarh were arrested on Wednesday in connection with alleged financial irregularities amounting to Rs 51.46 lakh in teacher salary payments for aided schools, an official said.
Police arrested District Social Welfare Officer Rajesh Chaudhary and office assistant Satendra Bahadur Singh on Wednesday, they said.
The action was taken under the state government's "zero tolerance" policy against corruption, the statement said.
The matter came to light following a complaint regarding irregular salary payments to teachers in aided educational institutions.
Acting on the complaint, the District Magistrate of Azamgarh constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the allegations.
The inquiry report prima facie confirmed large-scale financial irregularities and misuse of official position.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Asim Arun said the government is continuously taking strict action against those involved in corruption.
"Whoever the accused may be, no one will be spared. Even earlier, people involved in such corruption cases have been sent to jail," he said.
