On September 27, before the first light of dawn brushed across the Vembanad Lake, Willingdon Island, Kochi’s hub for commercial shipping and cruise liners, was already throbbing with energy. The Bristow Ground on the island became the pulsating focal point of the city, as around 3,000 runners gathered for the inaugural edition of THE WEEK Half Marathon. Organised under the banner of ‘Running for a Healthy Heart’, the event delivered far more than a sporting contest; it offered a resounding communal commitment to wellness.
The flagship 21km Half Marathon was flagged off by Olympian Sini Jose alongside V. S. Jayaschandran, Editor-in-Charge of THE WEEK. The route took participants past the island’s historic maritime structures and quiet, tree-lined avenues. For seasoned distance runners, the flat terrain promised fast times.
The 10km category leaped into action shortly after, flagged off by Arjuna Award winner George Thomas and Dr Anju Miriam Alex, director, BMH. The 5km fun run set off a while later by actor Jayasurya, bringing an explosion of colour and energy to the event ground.
In the 21km race, Sanju Joseph delivered a tactical masterpiece, setting an aggressive early pace and maintaining his lead to secure the champion’s title. In the 10km event, Prahlad Kumar claimed top honour.
Beyond the podium finishes, the true heartbeat of the marathon lay in its diverse participation. The 5km run transformed the island into a vibrant festival. Families ran side by side, corporate teams tested their camaraderie and many novice runners celebrated crossing their very first athletic milestone.
And, the broader impact of the event was clear; cardiovascular health remains one of the most critical public health priorities today.
