A Polish man, allegedly influenced by far-right ideologies, drove into a crowded central square in Krakow on Saturday and opened fire, killing six people and injuring 17 others. Police shot and arrested the suspect.

In a further shocking development, three more bodies were later discovered at his home.

The victims of the shooting included four women and two men. At least three of the women were Polish, while one of those killed was a UK citizen, authorities said at a news conference. Police were still working to identify the remaining two victims hours after the attack.

Those injured included nationals of Austria, Germany, Portugal, Russia and Britain.

"Everything points to the fact that the shooter was influenced by far-right ideology, a matter that will also be subject to investigation," Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski told reporters.

Name of the 24-year-old Polish suspect has not yet been disclosed.

Police said the suspect was dressed in military-style clothing and used military-grade weapons, including an AR-15 rifle. Several other weapons were also found in his vehicle.

Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo told the media that the attacker continued firing at police even after being shot. He went on a "wild ride" around Main Square, resulting in people being injured at several locations, Cislo said.

Authorities said 17 people, including two police officers, were being treated in hospitals, with 13 of them in serious condition.

Three bodies found at gunman's home

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the bodies of two women and one man had been found at the suspect's home in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, nearly 200 kilometres north of Krakow.

The victims are believed to be close relatives of the suspect.

The prime minister said a drone had been used to inspect the house because of potential security risks.

"We know that a significant amount of weaponry may be inside the house," he said.

Local media reported that residents had been evacuated from the building where the suspect lived and that counterterrorism officers had entered the premises.
