A 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh truck driver was brutally stabbed seventeen times in Wyoming, an incident that has raised alarms within the South Asian community due to its timing following a controversial DHS social media post depicting a character named 'Mr Singh'. Shocking the entire South Asian community in the US, a 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh man was stabbed seventeen times in Wyoming early Sunday morning.

The man, identified as Gurvinder Singh, is a truck driver from Sacramento, California. He has been driving trucks commercially on I-80 for the past three years. Singh said the attack was unprovoked and that he was shaken by the violent encounter.

The South Asian community has correlated the attack to a social media post released by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on September 9 that featured an AI-generated image of a brown-skinned, bearded man with a head covering labelled “Mr Singh”. The poster also carried the message, "Get off our roads, you don’t know how to drive, Mr Singh” and “Self-deport or find out.”

The DHS removed the poster after heavy backlash and later clarified that the image intended to show Harjinder Singh, an Indian national who was charged for a fatal Florida crash in August 2025.

The DHS said "Harjinder Singh is an illegal alien from India who should never have been in our country." 

US congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has condemned the stabbing and criticised the DHS for sending the wrong message through their social media post.

"The Sheriff's Office has said there is no known motive at this time, but we cannot separate this incident from the climate in which it happened," said Jasjit Singh, director of legal services at the Jakara movement, a California-based organization that serves the Punjabi Sikh community and has been providing support to the victim.

The incident took place around 3:00am when Singh allegedly made a pit stop at a South Wyoming restroom on his way to Pennsylvania. He told National Public Radio and The Sacramento Bee that he was familiar with the place and had previously used the rest stop multiple times. However, this time he sensed another man following him. 

Singh walked inside the bathroom and was looking at the mirror when the man immediately began to beat him. He reportedly punched Singh in the head and neck. He then proceeded to pull out a blue knife and pushed Singh against the wall. He stabbed him multiple times around his body, including his neck, arms and chest. The attacker then fled. Singh managed to step outside the bathroom and call 911 before collapsing onto the pavement.

The police later identified the accused as 44-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak from San Gabriel, in Rawlins.

A Hispanic family who were using the rest area heard grunting and screaming from the men’s restroom. They found Singh, attempted to tend to his wounds and called for medical help. Singh was airlifted to Wyoming Medical Centre. He remains hospitalised as of Wednesday night. 17 lacerations, including two stab wounds to the neck and chest, were recorded by investigators.

The family also helped find Bzdak, who allegedly ran out, got into a red semi-truck with a trailer marked “JKC”, and drove east. The family had initially followed the attacker and photographed the truck before returning to Singh in the parking lot. Singh said the family gave him “the second life”.

As of September 17, Bzdak was held at Sweetwater County Detention Centre on suspicion of attempted murder. He is charged with first-degree murder.
