An Indian Air Force (IAF) veteran and Kargil war hero was assaulted by a parking attendant at Magnum Global Park in Gurugram on Thursday night. The heinous attack left Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta (retired) with serious head injuries and a fractured hand. The former airman, who was part of ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ during the Kargil War, reportedly needed surgery to fuse his elbow bone with plates.

According to Gupta, the incident occurred when he went for a family dinner at Gonzo restaurant at Magnum Global Park on Thursday night. After dropping his family off in front of the restaurant around 8 pm, he was looking for a spot to park his car. He was sent from pillar to post by the parking staff, but there was no space anywhere, NDTV said in a report.

During his desperate search to find a place, the IAF veteran tried to reverse his car and was met by the parking attendant's baton. The employee's immediate reaction was to hit and break the car's windscreen, he alleged. It was then that he was assaulted.

When Gupta got out of the car to protest the man's violent behaviour, he was assaulted using an iron rod. According to NDTV, the veteran was left profusely bleeding after being hit twice with a rod. He was reportedly struck on the hand and then on the head.

Since none of the accused man's colleagues bothered to help, he contacted the police helpline number. However, there was no immediate help. Gupta said it was a chef who finally reached the spot and helped him up before moving him to a hospital in an ambulance.

"We will proceed according to the rules based on the findings—incorporating relevant medico-legal reports, CCTV footage analysis, and other gathered evidence. The incident occurred on the 10th, and initially, the Captain had submitted a written statement indicating he did not wish to pursue legal action. However, he submitted a fresh complaint on the 13th. Based on a review of that complaint and other evidence, we have registered an FIR and are taking the necessary action. The victim is a resident of Sector 61. The accused have been identified via CCTV footage, and action will be taken against them as per the rules," news agency ANI quoted Gurugram ACP  Abhilaksh Joshi as saying
