U.S. President Donald Trump, who is known for loving his time on stage, had his fair share of awkward moments at the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
After Trump was taken to the stage to present Spain’s national team with the trophy, he lingered around blocking what was meant to be an iconic shot of the winning players with the prize, with confetti raining down.
Spain’s captain, Rodir, is nudging Trump to move along as the players prepare for the celebratory shot.
What made the moment cringeworthy was the fact that FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a close friend of Trump, also had to intervene. He is seen asking and trying to remove Trump from the shot. Trump smiles and shakes him off as the confetti gets blasted and the team tries their best to ignore him.
The president took his time walking off.
A commentator with Australian broadcaster SBS referenced the moment, saying, “They can edit him out of that.”
The clip quickly gained attention online, and football fans were quick to support the sentiment.
The audience also showed their disdain for the US president while he entered the field after the match, waving.
He was greeted with loud booing as he and Infantino walked onto the pitch to present the trophy.
In another moment captured on camera, football fans noted that there was no handshake between Argentina defender Christian Romero and Donald Trump.
Trump and his close associates have been a constant presence at the World Cup ever since the US became one of the three host countries, along with Canada and Mexico, for this year’s World Cup.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin were all present when the US team played against Paraguay.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick attended the U.S. match against Bosnia, and second lady Usha attended the US group stage finale against Turkey.
Trump also got involved in one of the bigger controversies when he asked Infantino to review a red card handed to US striker Folarin Balogun in a group stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The player's red card ban was suspended, and he played against Belgium in the last 16.
The US, however, lost that game 4-1.
