The International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced deposed former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina to death on Monday after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity.

The sentence was delivered on the former PM’s 58th wedding anniversary. Hasina married nuclear scientist Dr M.A Wazed Ali Mia on November 17, 1967.

According to Legal Adviser for Law, Justice and Parlimentary affairs of Bangladesh, Professor Asif Nazrul, the death sentence verdict was a great achievement in establishing justice. He said that the government will write to India again to extradite the former prime minister, who is currently in exile in the country.

Nazrul made the comments immediately after the verdict was delivered, Protham Alo reported.

Speaking to reporters, he said "Today is a historic day for Bangladesh. Today is the greatest event of establishing justice on the soil of Bangladesh. The brutal murderer who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people, serious injuries to thousands of people, mutilation, and disability during the July Uprising, Sheikh Hasina, has been sentenced to death today. Her main aide, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, has been sentenced to death. I think today is another victory day for the July Uprising."

The legal advisor said that Bangladesh would write once again to India to extradite Sheikh Hasina. “If India continues to shelter this mass murderer, then India must understand that it is an act of hostility, a highly reprehensible behaviour against Bangladesh and the people of Bangladesh,” he said.

Nazrul also said that he was not surprised by the verdict and that “Given the fresh, irrefutable and strong evidence of crimes against humanity committed by Sheikh Hasina and her associates, they should be given the maximum punishment if tried in any court in the world."
