Two children were among the five members of two Indian-origin families killed in Australia when a luxury SUV crashed into a pub, reports said.

The vehicle rammed into the pub's packed outdoor dining area, news agency PTI said.

The victims of the tragic incident were identified as Vivek Bhatia (38), his son Vihan (11), Pratibha Sharma (44), her daughter, Anvi (9), and Jatin Chugh (30). Sharma and her family were enjoying a holiday with family friends.  Vivek Bhatia and Vihaan died on the spot while Bhatia's 36-year-old wife Ruchi (36) and son Abeer (6) remain hospitalised with serious injuries, the report said.

The incident happened on Sunday evening when a white BMW mounted a kerb and hit people on the front lawn of the Royal Daylesford hotel, PTI said quoting a local media. The driver was interviewed by police in hospital following the crash.

At this time the driver has not been charged, with inquiries to continue after his eventual release from care, a police statement provided to the media said.
