Remains of at least 87 people have been found at a mass grave discovered in Sudan's West Darfur the UN said on Thursday. The UN Human Rights Office said it had “credible information” that Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were responsible."I condemn in the strongest terms the killing of civilians and hors de combat individuals, and I am further appalled by the callous and disrespectful way the dead, along with their families and communities, were treated," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told Reuters. Turk called for a thorough investigation and added that the RSF allow and prompt search for the dead.

Among the victims were ethnic Masalits. The killings took place in the West Darfur state capital El-Geneina between June 13-21. The RSF then allegedly ordered locals to bury the victims on the outskirts of the city. According to the UN Human Rights Office, there were seven women and seven children among those buried.

A lot of the victims were of the violence that followed the killing of Khamis Abbaker, the Governor of West Darfur, on 14 June. Abbaker was taken into custody by the RSF shortly before this.
