Thai cave rescue survivor dies aged 17

One of the boys who was rescued from a flooded cave complex in northern Thailand died in England, aged 17. 

Duangpetch Promthep, one of the 12 boys who was trapped in the flooded cave. Promthep suffered a head injury after he fell on the ground in Leicester, where he was studying football. He was found unconscious in his dorm on Sunday and died in hospital on Tuesday, according to the BBC. Attempts to resuscitate the teenager weren't successful. 

Promthep enrolled in Brooke House College Football Academy in Leicester in 2020. After the cave rescue incident, he received a scholarship for the institute. He was one of 12 members of the Wild Boars football team. He was 13 at the time. All his team members were between the ages of 11 and 16. Promthep, a popular figure in his community, was the captain of the Wild Boars football team.

Wat Doi Wao temple in Chiang Rai, which the team frequented, posted condolences to Promthep on Facebook on Wednesday. Promthep along with his 11 teammates and coach entered the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province on June 23, 2018, after soccer practice. They got trapped there due to rising flood waters. The rescue efforts took several days. The boys and their coach were eventually helped out on July 10 with help of more than 900 police officers, 10 helicopters, seven ambulances and 97 foreigners including expert cave diggers.
