Former President Donald Trump will mark the anniversary of the storming of the US capitol with a press conference at his Mars-a-Lago resort, where he will reiterate his opposition to the election results.

His talking points will remain his claim that he defeated Joe Biden in the election. In a statement, Trump referred to the November 3 election day as the “insurrection” and said the events of January 6, when hundreds of his supporters stormed the Capitol building amid threats to hang Vice President Mike Pence for his , were an “unarmed protest of the rigged election”.

One police officer died of a stroke the day after he was pepper-sprayed during the riots, while five rioters

“Remember the insurrection took place on November 3,” he said.

The former president slammed the work of the congressional committee that is investigating the Capitol Riots.

Trump’s perceived support for the rioters is why social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook banned his account in their aftermath. He was also impeached by the House, but was later acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate.

Since losing his Twitter account, Trump has relieved mostly on official statements and his relatives to convey his continued dismay at the election’s outcome.

In August, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that two-thirds of Republicans believed that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Trump.

Controversy over the election results stems from the different ways Democrats and Republicans voted: While the latter tended to vote in person, meaning their votes were the first to be counted, many Democrats voted by mail, leading to a delayed counting of their votes. States that appeared to have been Republican-won went on to turn blue as the Democrat votes were added up.
