At least three rockets struck Kandahar airport in Afghanistan overnight, an official told AFP. Two of the rocket hit the runway. “Last night three rockets were fired at the airport and two of them hit the runway... Due to this, all flights from the airport have been cancelled,» airport chief Massoud Pashtun said.

Pashtun said work to repair the runway is underway and the airport is expected to be operational later on Sunday.

The attack comes at the heels of the compound of the UN office in western Afghanistan’s Herat was attacked on Friday, where one of the guards was killed.

The Taliban, in recent weeks, have amplified their offensive attacks on Afghanistan, especially at the bordering provinces. Several Afghani troops on July 26 sought refuge in Pakistan amidst increased attacks by the militant group. Kandahar's airbase provides vital logistics and sir support to keep the Taliban from capturing Afghanistan's second-biggest city.

Even as the militant groups moves steadily over provinces in Afghanistan, the government has been repeatedly dismissing the group’s progress.

According to the Afghan foreign ministry, the Taliban has captured about 193 district centres and 19 border districts.
