More than 200 passengers were injured in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday when two metro trains collided in a tunnel, police said.

The incident took place in an underground tunnel near the Petronas Tower, just before 9 pm.

One of the trains was empty and the other one was packed and they were headed in opposite directions. 47 people have sustained severe injuries.

Images of injured passengers sprawled on the floor of a carriage are circulating on social media.

"We are still investigating the incident..., but we suspect that perhaps there was a miscommunication from the trains' operations control centre," district police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said told Reuters.  The collision seemed to be a result of miscommunication, he added.

This is the first major accident since the metro services started operating about 23 years ago.

Both the trains were travelling at a slow speed at the time of the accident.
