The police have formally identified the body of a woman found in woodland in Kent, to be that of Sarah Everard. Everard had gone missing from the streets of south London on March 3.

A serving police officer was arrested on March 10 concerning Everard’s case. The police continue to investigate the case. The Met police is under investigation over its handling of an allegation of indecent exposure against the officer, Wayne Couzens, suspected to be involved in the Sarah Everard case. Everard’s family has been informed.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has said its investigation relates to an alleged incident in a south London fast-food restaurant reported on February 28. Couzens remains under custody. Couzens, who was arrested on suspicion of kidnap, is now also be investigated for suspicion of murder and suspected indecent exposure.

“That investigation continues at a pace and we have hundreds of officers working round the clock to establish the full circumstances of Sarah’s disappearance and her murder,” the Met assistant commissioner Nick Ephgrave told The Guardian.

The police are still trying to determine the cause of death.

Activists have planned a vigil for Saturday protesting violence against women, but may not be able to go ahead with it due to coronavirus restrictions.

Footage from a doorbell camera showed Everard on the Poynders Road walking towards Tulse Hill, where she was last sighted.
