The mother of former Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf died in Dubai, her family announced on Friday.

Pervez Musharraf deposed then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a coup in 1999 and ruled Pakistan until 2008. Pervez Musharraf has been living in Dubai since 2016 and his mother was with him.

Geo News reported that, "Begum Zareen Musharraf was born in 1920 in Lucknow. She was staying with Gen (retd) Musharraf at his Dubai residence." Begum Zareen Musharraf was, reportedly, unwell for a long time. Her funeral will be held at the Al Quoz Cemetery in Dubai.

Begum Zareen had studied at the Aligarh Muslim University in the 1940s. In 2005, when Pervez Musharraf was president of Pakistan, Begum Zareen had made an emotional visit to Aligarh Muslim University and to Delhi.

The government-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported, “Late Begum Zareen had three sons; Dr. Javed Musharraf (an Economist), Dr. Naved Musharraf (an anaestheologist), and Pervez Musharraf (former President of Pakistan). Born in Lucknow in 1920s, she was a Masters in English Literature...”

Pakistani Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed grief at the demise of Pervez Musharraf's mother.

Choudhury Fawad Hussain, a minister in the Imran Khan government, tweeted, "she was a loving mother and despite many odds, she raised her children to achieve high goals in their careers. May her soul rest in peace.”

Pervez Musharraf himself has been unwell. He was diagnosed in 2019 with amyloidosis, a disease caused by build-up of the protein amyloid in the organs and tissues.
