At least five people were killed in a suicide attack that rocked Kabul early Tuesday morning.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes after nearly three months of relative calm in the capital.

“This morning at around 7 am, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives... killing five people including two civilians and three military personnel. Twelve were wounded, including five civilians,” said the ministry of interior's spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

According to a resident, it was a big explosion and a gunfire was also heard later and ambulances rushed to the area quickly.

The blast took place at the entrance gate of the Marshal Fahim Military Academy. The academy has been the scene of several attacks in the past including an Islamic State-claimed assault last May.

The Taliban, in an effort to keep peace talks with the US on track, have refrained from attacking major urban centres. However, there has been dispute over the conditions that would lead to the US troops finally leaving Afghanistan and ending a war that has been going on for 18 years. Progress seems to be hindered as insurgents have been trying to saddle blame on the White House by saying that the list of demands by the Americans to pave a way for the deal has been growing.
