Spencer Boston so firmly believed in the legalisation of marijuana that, when arrested for possessing the substance and taken to court, he lit up a joint and smoked it in front of the judge, jury and everyone else.

With this act, that has since gone viral on social media, Boston earned himself the additional charge of disorderly conduct and the contempt of court—the last of which fetched him 10 days in jail and a $3,000 bond to get out.

Boston, 20, had initially faced a simple marijuana possession charge, which, in the state of Tennessee, has a penalty of one year’s simple probation if it is a first-time offence.

However, when presented before the Wilson County Court on Monday, in front of Judge Haywood Barry, he started to speak out on the reasons why marijuana should be legalised.

Dramatically, he made his point by pulling out a joint from his jacket and a box of matches. He managed to light the joint up, take and take several drags before security personnel dragged him out of the courtroom.

While being led out, he faced the gallery and said, “The people deserve better!”.

His antics left the courtroom bursting with laughter, reportedly.

But, there may be a happy ending for Boston. A GoFundMe fundraiser was started by Megan Louise from Lebanon, Tennessee. With the promise to ‘free Spencer Boston’, with the it had goal of raising $3,000, his bond amount.

As of writing, it has raised $3,400 of that goal. If the money is directed to him, this means that after serving his ten-day sentence, Boston’s bond, at the least, can be paid off. In a sense, then, his antics may have paid off for him.
