Rescue teams continued to search for survivors after Typhoon Lekima triggered a landslide in the municipality of Wenzhou on Saturday as the overall death toll rose to 32, with several still missing.

In the landslide in Wenzhou, about 400km south of Shanghai, 18 were killed and more than a million people have been evacuated. Sixteen people were still missing, authorities said. Nearly 110,000 people were housed in shelters.

Lekima hit Wenling city in eastern China on Saturday, packing winds of 190kmph and generating waves several metres high along the coast.

Authorities said on social media platform Weibo that search and rescue operations are under way in many regions.

Lekima had crossed into Jiangsu province north of Shanghai and was expected to hit Shandong province later on Sunday, CCTV reported. Both provinces have already issued a red alert for torrential rain.

According to authorities, the natural disaster has caused economic losses of more than 15.8 billion yuan (USD 2.2 billion).

More than 3,200 flights have been cancelled due to the typhoon, the state broadcaster reported, as Shanghai, Beijing and other cities grounded planes.
