Hong Kong on Wednesday issued a tropical cyclone signal 8 as Typhoon Wipha approached China's coast in the southwestern part of Guangdong province.

Signal 8, the third highest warning, indicates higher wind speeds of 63kmph and more, with gusts that may exceed 180kmph. The highest warning signal is 10.

The Hong Kong Observatory said that the storm signal is expected to remain for the rest of the day. It also issued a thunderstorm warning. Heavy rain also raises the possibility of flash floods, it warned.

In light of the storm, schools, offices and financial markets were closed on Wednesday.

“Schools should implement contingency measures to ensure the safety of students. They should ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home,” the Education Bureau said in a statement.

The markets will remain closed on Thursday if the signal remains at 8 or goes beyond.

Ferry services have been suspended. The Hong Kong airport said that flights may also be affected because of the weather.

“Due to the impact brought by Typhoon Wipha, flight movements at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected. Airport Authority Hong Kong advises passengers to stay alert of airlines' announcements and confirm their seats before heading to the airport,” Hong Kong airport posted on its Facebook page.
