Injured Indian captain Shubman Gill will not take the field on the opening day of the practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI on Friday. Gill sustained an injury to his right finger during a practice session in Colombo on Thursday, reports said.
KL Rahul is leading India for the warm-up match as the top-order batter continues to be monitored by the medical team. SLC XI has won the toss and opted to bat in the three-day practice game.
"Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress," the BCCI posted on its 'X' handle.
According to available information, Gill was hit on his right finger while facing nets bowler Gurnoor Brar. Gill called for help immediately after impact and left the field to get further assistance from the team physio, Hindustan Times said in a report.
Shubman Gill was back and practised playing spin. However, the Punjab batter suffered a second blow to his right hand, the HT report said. Gill misjudged a sharp chance while practising catches at slips, it said. There is no official update on the seriousness of the injury, but with time still left before the first Test, there is optimism that he will be fit for selection.
India are touring Sri Lanka for a two-Test series, starting at Galle on August 15.
The second Test will be played here from August 23.
