Is Vitinha the "Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo-level signing" that Florentino Pérez has promised José Mourinho and Real Madrid fans alike? Many media outlets and football transfer enthusiasts believe so.
Pérez has already confirmed that the said signing is not a defender. He has also ruled out Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku, Harry Kane, and Michael Olise as this ultimate £100 million signing, convincing many that he is set to go after Vitinha.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder was named the official Player of the Match for the 2026 UEFA Champions League final. "He took charge in midfield – particularly in the second half – driving his team forward and setting the tempo. It was an excellent performance from the Portuguese midfielder," UEFA had said after PSG outgunned Arsenal in a penalty shootout. The Ligue 1 giants also became the first team after Real Madrid to defend the UCL.
Vitinha is arguably the best midfielder in the world right now. He began his career with Porto's academy and had a stint with Wolves as well before joining PSG in 2022. After agreeing on an extension last year, his current deal is valid until 2029.
Vitinha is represented by Jorge Mendes, who is said to have cordial ties with José Mourinho and Real Madrid. According to Spanish media reports, PSG are worried that the first round of talks has already taken place between their star player and Real Madrid.
Real's midfield has remained vulnerable ever since Toni Kroos hung up his boots. While Vitinha is not of the same mould as the German sniper, his presence in the engine room could definitely bring a tide of change for Los Blancos.
Why Vitinha is special?
Initially considered a box-to-box progressor, Vitinha has become a world-class, deep-lying playmaker who can control the tempo of the match. He is great at keeping the ball and is not unfazed by pressing.
Unlike traditional "sit-and-hold" defensive midfielders, Vitinha loves to carry the ball forward and can fire from range when needed. Such a dominating player in the middle of the park is the kind of upgrade that the La Liga giants would dream of having after two consecutive trophyless seasons.
Needless to say, PSG will not let the player leave easily. But if he insists on leaving, the situation could become complicated. "The Portuguese agent knows the market perfectly, has a direct line with the big clubs and could be key to bringing positions closer in an operation that, at the outset, would be very complicated," El Nacional said in a report.
