It was a painful sight like no other on a cricket pitch – a player injuring himself in action, and having to be carried away in an ambulance.
Delhi Capitals pacer Lungi Ngidi endured the horror on April 25 in the match against Punjab Kings. While trying to catch a mishit from Punjab opener Priyansh Arya off Axar Patel on the third ball of the second over, he landed on his back and the back side of his head hit the ground, leaving him in extreme pain. He remained on the ground holding his head, even as the on-field medical staff rushed with a stretcher.
Ngidi was seen responding to the support staff as other players, along with Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting and DC head coach Hemang Badani joined in. He was eventually stretchered into the waiting ambulance.
Good news 👏

Ngidi was rushed to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital from the Arun Jaitley Stadium in just 11 minutes instead of the usual 25-30 minutes, thanks to the green corridor created by the Delhi Police. But the real surprise came to light later – ACP Traffic (Central District) Sanjay Singh, who facilitated the green corridor, had played alongside Indian star batter Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir!
A former cricketer, Singh was part of the Delhi Police cricket team, according to HT Digital. “I played for the last time in 2012. There's something called the DDCA League Cricket match, where matches are played group-wise. There were ONGC and Indian Airlines teams. Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammad Kaif and Virender Sehwag used to play. Virat Kohli was a kid back then; he used to play too. I have played cricket with all of them.”
The stadium comes under his jurisdiction, and he was outside it when he was informed that the player was injured and that an ambulance had entered the field to take him to the hospital. “We had to give the route to the traffic guys. I went there, and the ambulance was near Gate No. 2. The Delhi Capitals officials were also there. Lungi Ngidi was inside the ambulance, wearing an oxygen mask. He wasn't moving, and panic gripped the people. I asked the driver, ‘Where are you taking him?’ It was then that he said that the plan was to take him to BLK Max Hospital in Rajender Nagar,” Singh was quoted as saying.

ACP Sanjay Singh — the officer who created the green corridor for Lungi Ngidi after being injured during the #DCvPBKS clash.
He recalls those crucial 11–12 minutes, sharing how the green corridor was managed and how the DCP later appreciated his action.

When Singh realised that the driver planned to rely on Google Maps to reach the hospital, he ordered a green corridor and the entire 8km was covered in 11 minutes. He was monitoring the entire situation, and getting the traffic cleared, he added.
Thankfully, the CT scan on Ngidi did not reveal any damage and was evaluated by a neurosurgeon, and discharged hours later.
The 30-year-old right-arm pacer has been a key bowler for the DC, claiming seven wickets in seven matches at an average of 29.42, with an economy rate of 8.70 and best figures of 3/27.
