The countdown has begun towards the transfer deadline and all Premier League teams are in the midst of last-minute steals. For Manchester United, a goalkeeper is a mandatory signing but one that they haven't been able to pull off just yet. Belgium's Senne Lammens has been linked to the Red Devils but that move doesn't have any clarity yet.

Which is why the United management decided to keep trying in alternate path involving Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper had been the fulcrum of his national side over the years but in the Premier League, he couldn't translate that on a consistent level. Martinez, though, still had done seemingly enough to be retained at the club but was informed that he wouldn't be, sparking an emotional dent in him. On Sunday (August 31), Martinez's next destination has seen a huge development with him agreeing to personal terms with Manchester United.
This is a huge step forward in United's bid for Martinez and it also gives the Red Devils back-up while they negotiate with Lammens. Over the next 48 hours, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester United will take a final decision by Wednesday. As per reports, Lammens still seems the priority for Ruben Amorim's side with the Portugese manager being vocal about the Belgian. However, Martinez has also been a top goalkeeper in recent years and should be an able option, should the Lammens deal not work out.

Representatives from Old Trafford are set to make direct contact with Aston Villa to pursue Martinez's deal further and to understand the valuation for the Argentine. Unlike previous last-minute heartbreaks, United are determined to ensure that they have their goalkeeper issue sorted before the transfer window ends. Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have both been disappointing in their stints so far with the former not showing any signs of consistency despite getting a longer rope at the club. Bayindir could still get some respite, given that these are early days but United's hot pursuit for a new goalkeeper indicates that time is running out for both of them.
