After an embarassing 2024-25 Premier League season where they finished 15th on the points table, Manchester United have been preparing a road map for the future. Plenty of players in the club have been reportedly in the management's 'release list' as they look to free up funds for making big-wicket purchases.

Manager Ruben Amorim, who took over after the midpoint of the previous season, has been vocal about adapting his trademark 3-4-3 formation into United's gameplan, which understandably means a revamp of resources on all fronts. Meanwhile, the Red Devils have also been on the hunt for a prolific striker upfront, given the ineffectiveness of their attacking resource in the 2024-25 season. However, the absence of European football and lack of financial power at the moment has meant that United have missed out on most of their top targets.

Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres were two of the main names floating around with Victor Osimhen also in the mix. However, none of them materialised due to different reasons and United now have their eyes on Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko who plies his trade with RB Leipzig. There is also an outside possibility of Ollie Watkins although Aston Villa haven't responded positively to United's advances just yet.

The club's relentless pursuit of an prolific attacker only means that Amorim doesn't trust the current set of players that he has, especially Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho with the latter having disciplinary issues as well against him. Meanwhile, Hojlund's work ethics in the off-season has impressed Amorim but the Portugese manager still revealed uncertainty over the Danish striker's future at the club. Hojlund endured an underwhelming 2024-25 season, as did most of United's players, but he has a strong view on his future at the club.

“I think the most important (thing) for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we’ll see what happens,” Højlund said. “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens.”

A mere 14 goals from 62 appearances is far from ideal for a striker but he has been in strong form in the pre-season friendlies. Despite the uncertainty around his future, Hojlund has his mind clear. He realises that if and when United get their potential targets in the mix, he could face a lot more unstability regarding his role in the side.

"It was a tough season (in 2024-25) for us all. I think I should have done better, I think everybody knows. But I also think it's a team thing, that we're going to be better now. I think we've shown now in these two games that we're progressing in the right way and looking forward to what's coming."

As things stand, the new signings in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are already set to be sure starters for the club barring last-minute injuries, which means that Hojlund has a lot of catching up to do. Not that he is complaining and Hojlund chose to look at the positive side of it.

“Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me,” Højlund said. “I’m more than ready. I’m feeling sharp so I’m welcoming everything that comes. I think it’s good with competition and it only sharpens the team.”
