Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong's season is over after suffering an injury during the El Clasico meeting with Real Madrid on Monday. Dutch international De Jong had collided with Real's Fede Valverde and missed the second half of the game his side eventually lost 3-2.

According to reports, it is yet another ankle injury that Frenkie de Jong has suffered during the much-awaited La Liga clash. The injury has cast a shadow over his Euro 2024 campaign. However, ESPN reported on Monday citing sources that the 26-year-old is likely to recover fully ahead of the continental tournament.

Barca was forced to replace De Jong with Pedri after it became clear that the Dutchman was in no shape to continue after the challenge from Fede. Following an on-field checkup by the medical team, he was stretchered off.

The ongoing campaign was difficult for the midfielder, due to injuries. He was sidelined between September and November before suffering another injury in March.

According to reports, with the La Liga title race almost over following the El Clasico defeat, Barca have no reason to hurry him back to service. Thus, De Jong is likely to undergo rehabilitation with no priorities but to be available for Ronald Koeman in a couple of month's time. With six rounds of games left, Real Madrid lead second-placed Barca by 11 points.

The first game of Euro 2024 will be played on June 15 with hosts Germany taking on Scotland. The Netherlands is clubbed alongside Austria, France and Poland in Group D.
