As Romario Shepherd entered beast mode in the final over of the innings, Delhi Capitals experienced seamer Anrich Nortje had no answers. The West Indian batter's cameo for the Mumbai Indians damaged Nortje's stats so badly that he ended up conceding 65 runs in four overs.
Tim David (45* from 21) and Shepherd (39* from 10) took Mumbai Indians to 234/5 against Rishabh Pant's team. Shepherd began the over by sending short of a length outside off delivery to the boundary before hitting three sixes in a row. The fifth ball was hammered right back past Nortje before he hung deep to whip the final ball of the innings over long on to find the fourth six of the over.
A dejected Nortje, who had earlier dismissed Suryakumar Yadav (0 off 2) and captain Hardik Pandya (39 off 33), had given away 32 runs -- the most by anyone to have bowled the final over of an innings in IPL history. Earlier, Nortje had gone for 25 runs in the last over of the innings when DC met Rajasthan Royals. Riyan Parag punished the South African for three boundaries and a couple of sixes before taking a single off the last ball.
The unwanted record for bowling the costliest last over of an IPL game was held by Ashok Dinda to date. Playing for the Pune Supergiants in 2017, Dinda went for 30 runs against Mumbai Indians.
Dinda also gave away 26 runs in the last over in an IPL game twice, ESPN Cricinfo showed.
