The popular video game, Tetris, has officially been beaten for the first time by a human—a 13-year-old!

Willis Gibson, a gamer who goes by the name ‘Blue Scuti’, posted a 42-minute video on YouTube titled ‘The First Time Somebody has ever “Beat” Tetris’, on January 2, showing him make his way through the game until it crashed, officially making him the first human to have outsmarted the game.

In the 38-minute of the game, he says “Please crash”, and a few seconds later, it does. In utter disbelief, he leans back into his chair. “Oh my God. I’m going to pass out.”

Gibson played till level 157 before the game reached its kill screen. It was believed that it was only possible to play until level 29. He also beat the overall top score, 999999.

The US teen has been playing the game since he was 11 and has competed in multiple gaming tournaments. In his YouTube video description, he says, “When I started playing this game, I never expected to ever crash the game, or beat it.”

What is Tetris?

Tetris is a video game created by software engineer Alexey Pajitnov in 1985. Nintendo is credited to have developed the first official console release of the game. In the game, the players are provided with different shaped pieces - tetrominoes, that fall on to the playing field - enabling the players to arrange the pieces accordingly, with the aim of creating a horizontal line that then vanishes, thereby racking up points.

The game is exceptionally difficult to beat as the pieces fall faster the more you progress into the game. A kill screen appears when the player reaches a point in the game that causes it to crash and the game does not move forward.

Only bots and AI have been able to reach a point of kill screen, until Gibson.

The teen, reportedly, dedicated his win to his late father, Adam Gibson, who passed away on December 14, 2023.
