Juventus lifted their ninth Serie A title in a row after defeating Sampdoria 2-0 at Allianz Stadium on Sunday with two games to spare. Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Juventus as coach Maurizio Sarri celebrated his first major honour in Italian football.

Juventus would have lifted the title earlier last week, had it not gone down 2-1 at Udinese on Thursday.

Juventus were just one point clear of Lazio before the sport was suspended in March following the Covid-19 pandemic. After resumption, Juve’s four straight victories helped them stretch their lead on top and become the undisputed champion of Italian football.

Sarri’s side has 83 points while Inter have 76 and Atalanta and Lazio have 75 each. With this Serie A title, Juve extended its record run, which stretches back to 2011-12, and Sarri became the oldest coach to win the Serie A at 61.

This is Juve’s 36th Italian league title overall.

Ronaldo scored his 31st goal in the first-half stoppage time before Bernardeschi found the net in the 67th minute as Juventus inched closer to the title.

The Portuguese, who missed a late penalty in the 89th minute, reached 50 career Serie A goals in just 61 games.

“He has this incredible ability to recover,” said Sarri about Ronaldo. “I think it’s just in his DNA, his ability to project himself on to the next goal, every time. His mental and physical recovery rate is definitely unique.”
